Rhodiola rosea is well known for its anti-stress properties, and its effects on depression, diverse illnesses like schizophrenia, seasonal affective disorder, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
There are more than 200 species of Rhodiola, growing mainly in the high altitudes of Eastern Europe, Asia and Alaska, with 70 species in China. Close to 20 species of Rhodiola are used in traditional Asian medical systems. Rhodiola rosea is known as golden root or artic root. It is a popular plant in traditional medicine in Eastern Europe as well as in Asia.
Rhodiola is among the most adaptable herbs
In Chinese medicine, it is used to increase resistance to fatigue and stress. Rhodiola gained its reputation as a medicinal plant in Siberia and Scandinavia. They attribute to it the power to increase physical endurance, longevity, sexual vigour, memory and mental faculties. In Siberia today, they still offer young married couples a bouquet of Rhodiola roots so that they will have healthy children. Mongolian doctors have been prescribing it to fight flu, tuberculosis and cancer. In Sweden, they declare that the Vikings got their legendary physical strength and remarkable endurance from this plant. Stories are told of how Chinese emperors sent expeditions to Siberia for the purpose of bringing back this precious root.
Rhodiola rosea has been intensively studied in Russia and in Scandinavia for more than 35 years. The scientific literature demonstrates that this plant has properties that fight stress, depression, and cancer and also has properties that protect the cardio-vascular system and the nervous system, particularly in the case of such different diseases as schizophrenia, seasonal affective disorder, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Its most noted advantage is its power as an adaptogen along with its anti-stress actions and its positive effects on the memory.
Mechanism of the physiological action of Rhodiola rosea
It acts as an antioxidant, inhibits the propyl endopeptidase enzyme, facilitates monoaminergic activity and activates the opioid receptor. The propyl endopeptidase enzyme metabolises many neuro-peptides such as vasopressin, the P substance, a thyrotropin-releasing hormone and the Alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone, all of which play an important role in the memory process. Rhodiola rosea inhibits monoamine oxydase (MAO) and catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT), and facilitates the movement of neurotransmitters in the brain. Another part of its action is the liberation of endorphins. Russion research indicates that Rhodiola rosea induces the biosynthesis of opioid peptides by activating the opioid receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems.Rhodiola rosea acts on stress hormones and notably diminishes excess stimulation from the axis of stress (CRF-ACTH-cortisol), as well as decreasing the catecholamines (nor-adrenalin and adrenaline) in the adrenal medulla glands. In this way, Rhodiola helps to prevent the negative effects of acute and chronic stress and also all the pathologies that are linked to an elevated level of cortisol. Rhodiola rosea also increases the inter-cerebral concentration of dopamine, nor-adrenalin and serotonin.
Gamma Force offers you a Rhodiola Rosea root extract of 500 mg per vegetable capsule standardized at 5 % of rosavin and containing about 2% salidrosides.
